Blairstown Mourns Couple Killed in House Fire, Remembered for Wide-Ranging Contributions

The close-knit community of Blairstown, New Jersey, is grieving the loss of Paul and Sheila Avery, a couple whose lives were marked by creative, civic, and professional achievements, after a devastating house fire early Tuesday morning. Authorities reported that New Jersey State Police responded to a fire at the Avery residence on Mohican Road shortly before 1 a.m., only to find the structure fully engulfed in flames. Neither Paul nor Sheila Avery could be rescued from the blaze.

Paul Avery, 78, was a man of many talents who touched numerous fields. He began his acting career in the 1970s, appearing in the 1978 film "Superman" and the popular soap opera "All My Children" in the 1980s. A decorated Vietnam War veteran, he later became the founder and executive editor of the Ridge View Echo, a community newspaper. His service extended to public office on the Blairstown Township Committee and membership in the local Rotary Club. Friends described him as a natural pilot who took up gliding as a beloved weekend hobby, flying from the Blairstown Airport.

"I always like to call Paul the most interesting man in the world, because he was when you consider everything he's done in his life. Acting, skydiving, Vietnam veteran, started a newspaper," said Joe Phalon, who works for the Ridge View Echo. Kevin Martin, owner of Jersey Ridge Soaring, recalled Avery as a gifted glider pilot: "He was a powered pilot previously, so he held some ratings, and so when he came to gliders it was, he was pretty much a natural pilot."

Sheila Avery, an accomplished individual in her own right, was remembered on social media as a mentor and friend. The couple's daughter, Kyle Avery, posted that she is now handling funeral arrangements, expressing deep love for her parents. Friends noted that the loss would leave a profound void, not only in Blairstown but also in surrounding towns. "His death is going to leave a real void in this community. Not just Blairstown, but the towns around as well," said Phalon. "I think we'll really miss him, and I think it's going to become more apparent over time."

As the community processes this tragedy, the focus has turned to celebrating the Avarys' full lives—a pilot, a writer, a politician, a soldier, an actor, a father, and a husband. The outpouring of grief on social media underscores how deeply the couple was woven into the fabric of the region. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by state authorities.
