Romanian Deputy Becali Accuses AUR Leader Simion of Breaking Promise on Veștea Government Vote

George Becali, a deputy elected on the AUR party list in Romania's parliament, has accused AUR leader George Simion of failing to honour a commitment to support the investiture of the Veștea Government. According to Becali, PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu revealed to him that Simion had previously promised President Nicușor Dan that he would vote for the government's confirmation, but ultimately did not do so.

Becali claimed that Grindeanu expressed surprise at Simion's breach of the promise, stating: "Grindeanu told me he was amazed. He said to me, 'I can't believe it. He promised the president he would vote. I can't believe such a thing. Simion promised the president he would vote.'" Becali further stated that he was voting in favour of the government as proposed by the president and emphasized the necessity of removing interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan from office, describing such removal as essential to prevent the country from being harmed economically.

The Veștea Government failed to secure the minimum 233 votes required for investiture in Monday's parliamentary vote, falling short of the necessary majority. This failure has forced the reopening of the prime ministerial nomination procedure. Becali highlighted the broader economic impact of the political crisis, noting that businesses, including his own real estate projects, have been blocked as a result of governmental instability.

President Nicușor Dan subsequently convened consultations with parliamentary parties and groups on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, to determine the next steps in forming a government. The failed investiture vote has reopened discussions about potential alternative candidates and coalition arrangements for the new governing formula.
