Essex lawyer becomes voice of Netflix's hit children's show Spike
Emily McGonagle, a former London lawyer, left her legal career in 2019 to pursue voice acting from a home studio in Essex. She now voices eight characters in Netflix's Spike, an animated children's series that premiered on 12 October and became the platform's seventh most-watched show globally in its first week.
Quick Facts
- Left legal career to become voice actor
- Built home soundproofed studio
- Auditioned for months before first paid role
- Voices eight characters in Spike
- Spike premiered on Netflix

Emily McGonagle, 42, transitioned from a demanding legal career in London to become a voice actor after questioning whether she could sustain late-night work while raising two young children. Working as a lawyer in Canary Wharf, she often finished shifts at 3 a.m. and commuted daily from Colchester to London. While on maternity leave, watching children's programmes with her sons sparked an idea: she began wondering how voice actors got into the industry.
In 2019, seeking more flexibility to care for her family, McGonagle pivoted to voiceover work. She converted a large wardrobe into a soundproofed booth equipped with professional audio equipment and began auditioning for roles online. Her first paid work came through Google. Over the following years, she progressed through commercials, radio adverts, and acting courses at her local theatre and in London, eventually building a portfolio that included work on video games and various broadcast projects.
Three years into her voiceover career, McGonagle auditioned for Spike after seeing the role advertised on LinkedIn. The animated series, created by Lithuanian company Bored Panda, had started as Fire Spike! on YouTube with fewer than 1,000 subscribers. She now voices eight characters in the show, including the main character's mother, a girl giraffe, a boy elephant, and a canine police officer—using various English and American accents. McGonagle works entirely from her home studio, communicating with the international team via Zoom; no in-person meetings have taken place.
Spike premiered on Netflix on 12 October and rapidly became the platform's highest-watched children's show in the UK and seventh most-watched programme globally in its first week. The YouTube channel now has 1.25 million subscribers. McGonagle has described the success as surreal, noting she never imagined progressing from watching Peppa Pig and wondering about the profession to seeing her own work appear alongside those shows in Netflix's top rankings.
McGonagle's transition reflects a broader pattern among voice actors who build home studios and leverage online platforms to enter the industry without traditional acting backgrounds. She has been shortlisted three times at the UK's One Voice Awards, including for Outstanding Live Event Announcer (2022), Best Character Performance in an Animation (2024), and Best Demo Reel Performance for a gaming demo (2026).

Why This Matters
Spike's rapid ascent to Netflix's seventh most-watched global programme in its first week signals measurable audience demand for the animated series and validates the production pipeline of Lithuanian studio Bored Panda. McGonagle's career transition exemplifies how remote home studios and online talent platforms (LinkedIn, Zoom-based collaboration) enable voice actors to enter professional animation work without traditional studio infrastructure, affecting hiring patterns and production cost structures for children's media.
