Progressive Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic Senate primary by narrow margin

Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, won Michigan's Democratic Senate primary on Wednesday after a narrow victory over establishment-backed U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens. El-Sayed secured approximately 48.9% of the vote to Stevens's 47.1%, a margin of fewer than 15,000 votes out of more than 1.5 million cast, according to results confirmed by the Associated Press early Wednesday morning.

The race became the year's most significant test of Democratic voters' willingness to embrace a progressive candidate in a critical swing state. El-Sayed, 41, campaigned on Medicare for All, campaign finance reform, and ending unconditional military aid to Israel. He received endorsements from progressive leaders including U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Stevens, a four-term congresswoman, focused on manufacturing, the economy, and her record in tough races, and was backed by Democratic leadership including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and retiring Senator Gary Peters.

Outside spending shaped the primary contest. Stevens benefited from over $65 million in outside spending, including the largest investment ever from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which spent more than $30 million supporting her. El-Sayed's campaign framed this spending as evidence of corporate influence in politics. The combination of establishment backing and financial support, however, did not deliver victory for Stevens.

Democratic leaders moved quickly to unite the party after the contested primary. Stevens called El-Sayed Wednesday morning to concede and released a statement offering her support. Former Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed El-Sayed, and a unity rally was held Friday in Detroit, headlined by Pete Buttigieg. El-Sayed also said Sunday he had spoken with former President Barack Obama and hoped the former president would campaign in Michigan, citing Obama's victories in the state in 2008 and 2012.

El-Sayed will now face Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman who ran unopposed in the GOP primary, in November. Democrats consider the seat—currently held by retiring Senator Gary Peters—essential to their hopes of gaining the four seats needed to flip Senate control. Republicans have already begun advertising against El-Sayed, with President Donald Trump calling him a "communist" who "hates" Israel and Jewish people, accusations El-Sayed rejected. Rogers released videos attempting to appeal to Democrats disappointed with El-Sayed's primary victory, emphasizing lingering divisions within the party.
