Mexico becomes first team to reach 2026 World Cup knockout stage with 1-0 win over South Korea

Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating South Korea 1-0 on June 18 at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico. The victory, before a jubilant home crowd, ensured Mexico topped Group A with six points from two matches, three points ahead of second-placed South Korea.

The decisive goal came in the 50th minute after a defensive mix-up by South Korea. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu collided with defender Lee Gi-hyuk and dropped the ball inside the area, allowing Mexico's Luis Romo to fire into an empty net. South Korea pressed for an equalizer but were denied by Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, who made a spectacular double save in the 87th minute, first stopping a close-range header by Cho Gue-sung and then stretching his right arm to keep out Yang Hyun-jun's rebound.

The result marks a significant turnaround for Mexico, which failed to advance past the group stage in 2022 and had been eliminated in the round of 16 in seven consecutive tournaments. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre acknowledged the team's gritty performance: "It wasn’t a great match, but our opponent didn't let us do too much. We still were able to score on that mistake." Aguirre noted that securing a spot in the next round, which will be played in Mexico City, relieves pressure on the players, who were "euphoric" after the win.

South Korea, ranked 22nd, started brightly but struggled to create clear chances. Star forward Son Heung-min had another disappointing outing and was substituted in the 57th minute. South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo lamented the costly defensive error: "The mistake that we made was unfortunate." His team will need to regroup ahead of its final Group A match against South Africa in Monterrey.

With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, a round of 32 is being played for the first time. Mexico will close group play on Wednesday against the Czech Republic in Mexico City. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place sides, advance to the knockout stage.
