Quick Facts
- 1,043 Ukrainian drones intercepted and destroyed
- 170 drones neutralized during approach to Moscow
- 87 additional drones intercepted by early morning October 30
- Temporary flight restrictions at 12 Russian airports

Russian air defense systems destroyed 1,043 Ukrainian drones overnight on October 29-30, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The drones were intercepted across 19 regions including Moscow, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Volgograd, Kursk, Kaluga, Kostroma, Orel, Penza, Rostov, Ryazan, Smolensk, Samara, Saratov, Tver, Tula, Yaroslavl, and Tatarstan.
Moscow was a primary target. According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, 862 drones were directed toward Moscow and the surrounding region between 20:30 on October 29 and 07:30 on October 30. Of these, approximately 170 were neutralized during the approach to the capital, while the majority were destroyed at longer ranges. By early morning on October 30, 87 additional drones had been intercepted. The intensity of the attack prompted Russian aviation authorities to temporarily restrict operations at multiple airports, including Moscow's Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky, as well as airports in Yaroslavl, Penza, Saratov, Ulyanovsk, Samara, Kazan, Bugulma, Nizhneknmsk, Cheboksary, and Saransk. Approximately 500 flights were delayed or cancelled. All airports resumed normal operations by morning.
Drone fragments and strikes caused damage in several regions. In Bryansk, explosive material from drones struck three schools and 17 kindergartens. In the village of Verkhi in Dyatkovsky District, Bryansk Oblast, a drone strike damaged a residential building, a former school, and destroyed a civilian vehicle. In Kaluga Oblast, 94 drones were reported intercepted overnight; Tula reported 21; and Rostov reported approximately 50. No casualties have been reported in these areas.
In response, Russian military forces reported striking targets in Ukraine overnight, including a rocket component factory in Kyiv (identified as the Kyiv Radio Plant and Trimen-Ukraine), a drone assembly facility (Fanplit), and the Novokievskaya substation near Khotov, as well as the Svetloe substation in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Russian forces also reported striking a general-cargo vessel in the Black Sea. These strikes were described as conducted using "high-precision ground-based weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles."
The October 29-30 attack followed a similar large-scale drone assault the previous night in which Russian air defenses reported destroying over 1,200 drones.
Topics
Why This Matters
A reported large-scale drone exchange occurred overnight between Russian and Ukrainian forces, directly affecting civilian air traffic across 12 Russian airports (approximately 500 flights delayed or cancelled) and causing documented damage to schools, kindergartens, and residential buildings in multiple Russian regions. Both sides reported striking targets in the other's territory, indicating sustained military operations with measurable impacts on civilian infrastructure, transport networks, and populations in affected areas. The frequency of such large-scale exchanges (this follows a reported 1,200-drone incident the previous night) suggests continued strain on air defense systems and civilian services across the region.
