Fulham manager Arbeloa given two games to save job after sixth straight loss
Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa has been given two games to save his job after the club's sixth straight Premier League defeat, a 2-1 loss to Ipswich where late goals cost them a lead. Arbeloa, appointed three months ago, remains without a league win and has Fulham bottom of the table with two points. The club's board is reportedly prepared to act if results do not improve against Hull and Coventry.
Quick Facts
- Fulham suffered a 2-1 loss to Ipswich
- Arbeloa given two games to save his job
- Fulham conceded two late goals after 88 and 90+2 minutes
- Fulham remain winless in Premier League under Arbeloa
- Fulham have conceded in final 15 minutes in four of six matches

Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa is under intense pressure to save his job after the club suffered a sixth consecutive Premier League defeat, with reports indicating he has been given just two matches to turn the season around. Fulham lost 2-1 at home to Ipswich on Saturday, squandering a lead when Ryan Sessegnon's 55th-minute goal was cancelled out by late strikes from Abdoul Ouattara (88 minutes) and Dara O'Shea (90+2 minutes). The collapse marks the second successive game in which Fulham have led late only to concede, leaving them bottom of the table with two points from six matches.
Arbeloa, appointed in summer 2026 after Marco Silva's departure to Benfica, has not yet secured a Premier League victory since taking charge. The 43-year-old former Real Madrid and Liverpool player acknowledged the difficulty of Fulham's position but insisted he does not fear the sack. "I never worry about my position. I don't feel fear," he said after the Ipswich match. "You cannot be a coach if you feel it. You have to work, take the decision and you need to show confidence to your players."
According to reports, Fulham's board is prepared to act if results do not improve in their upcoming fixtures against newly promoted sides Hull (17 October) and Coventry (24 October). Arbeloa's primary concern has been late-game vulnerability: his team has conceded goals in the final 15 minutes in four of six Premier League matches, indicating defensive issues during fatigue periods.
Arbeloa deflected focus from his own position to the club's situation, emphasising that with only six games played, points are the immediate priority. He referenced his experience at elite clubs to underline his ability to handle pressure. "Maybe you don't know me, but I played for the best team in the world. I have coached the best team in the world," he said. "Pressure is something that is important for me and I like it."
Meanwhile, Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil praised his players' comeback and fresh legs from substitutes Chuba Akpom and Jack Clarke. O'Neil noted that Fulham appeared to tire in the final 20 minutes, allowing Ipswich to push forward and secure their third victory of the season. Fulham are now seven points behind the promoted side and face a critical stretch against fellow newly promoted opponents.

Why This Matters
Fulham's winless streak and table position create immediate employment and organizational stakes for Arbeloa. With two matches (Hull, 17 October; Coventry, 24 October) designated as decision points by the board, the club faces a managerial transition risk within a measurable 10-day window. Late-stage defensive collapses (four goals conceded in final 15 minutes across six matches) indicate specific tactical or fitness patterns requiring remediation. Results in these fixtures will determine whether Fulham's recruitment and strategic direction persist with current leadership or pivot.
