Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann Sentenced to Life Without Parole

Rex Heuermann, the Long Island serial killer responsible for the deaths of eight women, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on June 17, 2026, in Suffolk County Court in New York. The sentencing concluded a case spanning more than three decades, with Heuermann's crimes occurring between 1993 and 2010. He had pleaded guilty to seven murders in April 2026 and admitted to an eighth killing. Judge Timothy Mazzei imposed three consecutive life sentences without parole for first-degree murder counts, along with four additional 25-years-to-life sentences for second-degree murder counts, all to run consecutively.

Heuermann displayed minimal remorse throughout the proceedings, sitting stone-faced with his hands crossed and avoiding eye contact with speakers. When afforded the opportunity to address the court, he spoke in a quiet, nearly inaudible voice: "There are no words I can say. I am responsible for all that was said in this room today. The words I would say have no meaning." When Judge Mazzei directly questioned whether he felt any remorse for strangling eight innocent women, Heuermann nodded and briefly replied "Yes." The judge responded with sharp criticism, stating: "You've been described as a very big man, but you're a disgusting and despicable small man, if you're a man at all. And you're a coward!"

Prosecutors characterized Heuermann as a "remorseless and sadistic serial killer who only cares about himself," noting that he had created planning documents where he "methodically blueprinted" how to select, kill, and dispose of his victims. The case gained widespread attention in 2010 when the remains of four women were discovered on an isolated stretch off Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach, earning them the designation "the Gilgo Four."
