Hong Kong police have expanded their investigation into a brazen airport robbery, bringing the total number of arrested suspects to 13 after four additional suspects were apprehended by mainland Chinese authorities and handed over to Hong Kong police. The arrests follow a robbery on Thursday at Hong Kong International Airport's car park 3, where a 36-year-old local man was ambushed while transporting six gold bars worth HK$7 million (US$893,200) from Indonesia to Hong Kong.
The victim, employed by a mainland Chinese businessman, was attacked at approximately 12:30 a.m. by three knife-wielding assailants wearing face coverings. The suspects slashed his arms and legs before fleeing with his backpack containing the six gold bars, each weighing approximately 1 kilogram. The attackers escaped in a seven-seater vehicle with fake licence plates, heading towards Tung Chung. The victim sustained injuries to his thigh and arm and was treated at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.
Hong Kong police initially arrested seven suspects aged between 19 and 39, some with triad backgrounds. Using the city's extensive surveillance camera network, investigators traced the suspects and made the initial arrests by Thursday. Eight suspects were subsequently charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and related offences, appearing at Sha Tin Court on Monday, while one woman was released on bail. The four additional suspects—three men and a woman—were apprehended by mainland police in connection with the heist and transferred to Hong Kong authorities on Monday.
Police have stated that the attack was not random and was a targeted crime. However, the six gold bars remain missing, and the force continues to search for the stolen goods. The investigation has highlighted the cross-border nature of the crime, with some suspects having fled to mainland China following the robbery.
Why This Matters
This cross-border robbery highlights vulnerabilities in high-value goods transport at Hong Kong's critical airport infrastructure and demonstrates the city's ongoing collaboration with mainland authorities on organized crime. The case underscores the organized nature of the heist—involving triad elements and coordinated escape routes—signaling evolving criminal tactics targeting international commerce. For travelers, businesses, and security professionals, the incident reinforces the need for enhanced protective measures during valuable cargo movements and awareness of airport crime trends.
