Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot flying Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, was stabbed by his copilot during a violent cockpit altercation. Despite sustaining serious injuries and massive blood loss, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door and call for help, enabling passengers and crew to intervene and overpower the attacker. The Boeing 737 was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely with 182 people aboard.
The aircraft descended over 17,000 feet in approximately two minutes during the attack, roughly two hours into the flight. Flydubai confirmed that on-duty crew members who were traveling as passengers assisted in securing the aircraft. An Israeli passenger, Yaniv Hayoun, was among those who rushed into the cockpit to help restrain the attacker. Machchhar was initially treated in Tabuk and later transferred to a hospital in Abu Dhabi for ongoing medical care.
In his first public remarks during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, Machchhar described his thought process during the attack: "I was fighting for my life… I knew in that moment – one last push, Smit! Just do it. The door is right there." He continued, "I was doing this for my life, but at the same time, I knew that I couldn't let everybody else die." Machchhar is a father of two who trained as a pilot in New Zealand and has over 9,750 flying hours, with more than 6,400 as captain. He worked for SpiceJet for 11 years before joining Flydubai approximately four years ago.
Government and international leaders have praised Machchhar's actions. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a "hero" and stated that his "courage, patience and quick thinking… saved the lives of so many people." Modi also spoke directly with Machchhar's wife and parents, assuring them of government assistance. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described Machchhar's actions as demonstrating "extraordinary courage" and "remarkable presence of mind." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Machchhar showed "unbelievable courage" and that his actions, along with those of passengers and crew, prevented a disaster. U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters the pilot was "very severely" injured but managed to open the cockpit door: "He's a hero because he opened the door."
The motive for the copilot's attack remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet established a confirmed reason for the incident. Flydubai has described the event as an "altercation" on the flight deck. The incident triggered significant security responses in both Israel and internationally, with Indian government missions coordinating Machchhar's medical treatment and family support.
Why This Matters
A commercial aircraft experienced a violent cockpit altercation involving one crew member attacking another mid-flight, resulting in rapid altitude loss and emergency diversion. The incident affected 182 passengers and crew members aboard a Boeing 737, disrupted air traffic between the UAE and Israel, and has prompted security reviews across aviation authorities in multiple countries. Investigation into the copilot's motive remains ongoing, and medical treatment and recovery operations have involved coordination between government agencies in India, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
