Carrick and Fernandes resolve tensions after Bournemouth benching

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes held face-to-face talks at the club's Carrington training ground on Tuesday to resolve tensions following the Portuguese midfielder's public criticism of tactics and subsequent benching.

Fernandes was dropped to the bench for Sunday's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth after criticizing Carrick's defensive approach during Wednesday's 4-1 Champions League loss to Como. Fernandes questioned the decision to avoid man-to-man pressing, arguing that a more aggressive approach would have prevented Como from gaining confidence and exploiting spaces. He remained an unused substitute throughout the Bournemouth match, with Harry Maguire taking the captain's armband. Carrick described the omission as "pure football," though the move was widely interpreted as disciplinary.

The Tuesday meeting between the two men was described as open and frank, with both parties aiming to move past recent friction. According to sources, Carrick was satisfied that animosity between them had been resolved, though it remains unclear whether Fernandes apologized for his public comments. An all-squad meeting also took place, with players and staff acknowledging squad-wide underperformance and committing to immediate improvement.

Fernandes is now expected to return to contention for Manchester United's Premier League fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Sources indicated Fernandes has been performing at his best in training since Monday. This development provides a potential lift for Carrick, whose position had been in serious jeopardy following the Bournemouth defeat, but the board granted him the opportunity to turn around United's fortunes despite the team languishing in 16th place with one win in eight Premier League matches.

United face a demanding schedule ahead, with Chelsea followed by home matches against Aston Villa and an away trip to Liverpool. The club's struggles extend across competitions, with eight consecutive matches without a win prior to the Bournemouth game. The club's board has reportedly shortlisted Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as potential replacements for Carrick, though senior figures view the players' underperformance as partly responsible for the team's position.
