Russell Dominates Baku Pole as Antonelli Crashes in Q1

George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Friday with a commanding performance, posting a lap time of 1:42.526 around the Baku City Circuit. His margin over second-place finisher Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was 0.837 seconds—Russell described it as likely the largest gap of his career. Mercedes' dominance at the street circuit was evident throughout qualifying, with Russell topping both Q1 and Q2 before his decisive final run in Q3.

Russell's pole came after his Mercedes teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli hit the inside wall at Turn 1 during Q1, sustaining damage to the front-left suspension and wheel. Antonelli's earlier lap time was sufficient to advance to Q2, but the 20-year-old Italian was unable to continue after being instructed to stop the car by his engineer. He will start Saturday's race from 16th on the grid. Antonelli, who leads the championship by 81 points, attributed the error to changing grip levels and described it as an unnecessary mistake in Q1.

Oscar Piastri rounded out the podium in third for McLaren, just 0.001 seconds behind Leclerc. The result marked a significant turnaround for McLaren after a difficult Friday practice that required cable ties to hold the bodywork together. Isack Hadjar took fourth for Red Bull on his return from a wrist injury, outqualifying teammate Max Verstappen in eighth. Lando Norris was fifth, while Lewis Hamilton finished sixth for Ferrari. Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz (Williams) completed the top 10, with Sainz earning Williams' first top-10 qualifying result of the season; he was later penalized five places for failing to slow for yellow caution flags.

Russell's pole marks his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June, also his last victory. The long Baku straight favors Mercedes' engine and car design. While Russell acknowledged Antonelli's ability to mount comebacks—the championship leader won from 19th at Monza earlier this month—he will start from an ideal position to capitalize on Mercedes' pace advantage and reduce Antonelli's substantial points lead in Saturday's race.
