Russian strikes kill 21 in Kyiv as Ukraine depletes missile interceptors
Russian forces struck Kyiv and surrounding regions overnight on August 5 with 115 drones and 24 ballistic missiles, killing at least 21 people and wounding dozens. Ukrainian officials attributed the heavy casualties directly to depleted stockpiles of Patriot missile interceptors, stating that adequate air defence systems could have prevented the deaths. The assault targeted warehouses, logistics facilities, and a railway station across multiple districts.

Russian forces launched a large-scale overnight assault on Kyiv and surrounding regions on August 5, deploying 115 drones and 24 ballistic missiles according to the Ukrainian Air Force. The strikes targeted warehouses, logistics hubs, commercial facilities, and a railway station, with at least 21 people killed and dozens wounded across multiple districts including Brovary, Bucha, and Fastiv. Most of the drones were intercepted, but Ukrainian air defenses could not stop any of the ballistic missiles.
The attack caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure. Major fires erupted at warehouse facilities in Brovary and nearby villages, a postal sorting centre, and retail locations. At Kvitneva railway station, eight people were killed on the platform. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that rescue teams pulled survivors from rubble near the city centre, though concerns remained that others were trapped. Emergency services were conducting search and rescue operations across four locations in Brovary district, two in Bucha, and one in Fastiv district.
Ukrainian officials directly attributed the casualties to depleted stockpiles of Patriot missile interceptors. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that "ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those killed today," noting that air defence missile supplies were three times lower than in 2025. Defence technology adviser Serhii Beskrestnov characterized the assault as part of a new phase in the war of attrition, with the enemy "attacking everything indiscriminately: retail warehouses, food storage facilities, logistics hubs, enterprises, building materials warehouses."
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed the strikes targeted transport and logistics facilities used for military purposes, including storage of drone components, robotic systems, and electronic-warfare equipment. Russia also reported striking three Ukrainian dry-cargo vessels in the Black Sea and destroying two uncrewed surface vessels. The assault marked one of the most intense nights of bombardment Kyiv has experienced in recent months.
The attack occurred amid ongoing diplomatic discussions about Patriot production. US officials have been discussing options with Ukraine to replenish interceptor stocks, including potentially allowing Ukraine to manufacture components domestically for assembly in Europe. However, US President Donald Trump had recently reversed an earlier commitment, stating the US had not agreed to let Ukraine build Patriot missiles. Ukraine has continued strikes on Russian targets, including Wildberries warehouses and energy infrastructure.

Why This Matters
The overnight strike on Kyiv and surrounding regions caused at least 21 confirmed deaths and dozens of injuries, with damage across civilian infrastructure including warehouses, logistics facilities, and a railway station. Ukrainian officials attribute the casualty toll directly to depleted air-defence interceptor stocks—specifically Patriot missile inventory reported as three times lower than 2025 levels—affecting military supply chains and civilian safety. The assault underscores ongoing resource constraints in Ukraine's air defence system amid continued Russian bombardment campaigns, while diplomatic discussions about Patriot interceptor production and potential domestic assembly remain unresolved.
