Titans Embrace Aggressive New Defense Under Saleh with Revamped Roster Led by Simmons

The Tennessee Titans are embarking on a significant defensive overhaul under new head coach Robert Saleh, implementing an aggressive scheme designed to free up talented players like All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to attack opposing offenses. Simmons, who posted a career-best 11 sacks last season, expressed enthusiasm for the new approach, stating "That's my game. I like to play on the other side of the line of scrimmage." Linebacker Cody Barton echoed the sentiment, predicting that Simmons "is just going to be causing havoc every play" under the revised scheme that emphasizes attacking rather than relying solely on technique and fighting through double-teams.

Saleh, hired after the Titans posted a second straight 3-14 record, brings extensive experience building dominant defenses. He pointed to his time with the San Francisco 49ers in 2019 as a blueprint, when the team switched to a more aggressive defensive philosophy and wound up with the third-best yards-allowed per game and second-best pass defense in the league, ultimately reaching the Super Bowl. The Titans have invested heavily in the offseason to support this new defensive identity, trading for defensive end Jeremiah Johnson II, signing veterans John Franklin-Myers and Solomon Thomas, and trading back into the first round to draft lineman Keldric Faulk. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley noted that Franklin-Myers shares similar attacking approaches with Simmons, making them complementary pieces.

The secondary has also been strengthened with the additions of cornerback Alontae Taylor, cornerback Cor'Dale Flott, cornerback Joshua Williams, and veteran safety Tony Adams. The linebacker group was bolstered with second-round draft pick Anthony Hill Jr. joining existing members Cody Barton and Cedric Gray. Notably, Simmons underwent offseason elbow surgery, having his right elbow cleaned up after being unable to fully straighten his arm for over two and a half years while wearing a brace during games—a health improvement he believes will enhance his performance.

Saleh plans to implement a snap-count rotation for the defensive line, limiting Simmons and fellow linemen to approximately 60 percent of snaps to maintain freshness and speed throughout games. Saleh will also call defensive plays in games, emphasizing that the strategy pays dividends in the fourth quarter when opposing offensive lines are worn down. "The faster the rush is, the faster we can get our feet in the ground, the faster we can anticipate where the ball is going," Saleh explained. This approach also constrains opposing offenses' ability to execute deeper-developing plays.

Simmons, a four-time Pro Bowler, has made clear his primary focus is on-field performance rather than contract negotiations, despite being in line for an extension on a deal that runs through 2027. "My goal to come into this season is just to make sure I'm in the best shape of my life," Simmons said, indicating his commitment to executing the new defensive scheme at the highest level.
