Japanese TV star Nakai Masahiro shifts from lifelong bachelorhood to cohabitation

Japanese television personality Nakai Masahiro (54), who long publicly stated conditions for marriage that made him unsuitable for it, has changed his approach to domestic life. According to reporting in Women's Seven magazine, Nakai's long-term partner M—a dancer who supported SMAP's choreography—has relocated her primary residence to Nakai's Tokyo luxury condominium, establishing what legal observers describe as a common-law marriage arrangement.

Nakai and M began their relationship approximately 15 years ago. About five years after they started dating, Nakai purchased a high-end apartment exceeding 300 square meters in Tokyo's premium residential district, but M maintained a separate residence to respect his stated preference for privacy. In December 2025, magazine reporters observed them shopping together in public, and when asked about marriage plans, Nakai replied "not at all." Within months, however, their living arrangement shifted fundamentally.

During SMAP's active years, Nakai had publicly declared marriage incompatibility, stating three conditions he considered non-negotiable: "not living together," "not monitoring," and "not getting close." According to entertainment sources, he has now abandoned the first condition. M has reportedly reduced her work commitments and moved her primary residence to Nakai's apartment. Those close to Nakai describe M as functioning as a common-law wife (内縁の妻).

Legal counsel explains that common-law marriage status in Japan—while lacking explicit statutory definition—is typically established through factors including shared household registration, spousal designation on official documents, and demonstrable cohabitation. Such arrangements generally confer rights and obligations nearly equivalent to formal marriage, though common-law spouses lack automatic inheritance rights without explicit wills. According to sources, Nakai has stated that he is "seriously considering establishing a household" and feels gratitude toward M for supporting him through difficult periods.

Nakai withdrew from entertainment in January 2025 following a series of professional difficulties. M remained at his side throughout this period, providing dedicated support. The shift in their domestic arrangement reflects both the changed circumstances of Nakai's life and his acknowledgment of M's years of commitment.
