GUADALAJARA, Mexico — In a dramatic 87th-minute sequence, goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel produced a stunning reflex save that secured Mexico’s 1-0 victory over South Korea and sent the host nation into the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup. The win also ensured Mexico finished top of Group A, becoming the first team to advance from the group phase.
The decisive moment began when Cho Gue-sung’s close-range header was brilliantly stopped by Rangel. The ball then ricocheted as the goalkeeper collided with a teammate, but Rangel quickly regained his footing to block Yang Hyun-jun’s follow-up attempt with an outstretched right arm, keeping the ball off the line.
“It was very quick, it was pure reaction,” Rangel said. “I couldn’t really tell you what I saw, because I remember the moment of impact with my teammate and me having the ball. But I think I was really focused, I came through when team needed me, and I’m happy about that.”
The 26-year-old, who plays for local club Chivas, was called up to the World Cup squad after an injury to expected starter Luis Ángel Malagón earlier this year. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre praised Rangel’s determination and consistency throughout his preparations.
“He showed me a lot of determination ever since we called him up for the first time,” Aguirre said. “He played very well for his team this season.”
Luis Romo, who also plays for Chivas, scored the only goal of the match for Mexico. Chivas’ home ground, Estadio Akron, is serving as one of the host venues for the World Cup in Guadalajara.
Mexico’s advancement marks a significant achievement for the co-host nation, which is sharing the tournament with the United States and Canada. The team now awaits its Round of 16 opponent.
Why This Matters
Mexico’s early knockout-stage qualification as Group A winners gives them a favorable Round of 16 matchup and provides a massive morale boost for the co-host nation. For Rangel personally, this performance cements his place as a national hero and signals his arrival on the global stage. Fans and analysts should watch how Mexico’s defense holds up against stronger offenses in the next round.
