Trump secretly switched to military aircraft after NATO summit amid Iranian threat
President Trump secretly flew from Turkey on a military C-32A aircraft after a NATO summit in July, following detection of a credible Iranian threat, while Air Force One was used as a decoy carrying journalists and staff unaware of the switch. Trump confirmed the decision was made by the Secret Service and military, but the operation has sparked criticism from Democrats and media observers over press transparency and the safety of those left aboard the decoy plane.

President Donald Trump confirmed on August 11–12, 2026, that he secretly departed Turkey on a military aircraft after attending a NATO summit in Ankara on July 7–8, citing a credible security threat from Iran. According to reports first published by The Washington Post, Trump boarded the older Air Force One in full view of cameras at Ankara airport, but was discreetly transferred via an airport catering truck to a smaller C-32A military aircraft. While he flew to RAF Mildenhall in the UK on the C-32A, the decoy Air Force One carried journalists, cabinet officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House staff, and security personnel unaware of the switch. Press members were instructed to keep window shades closed during the flight. Upon arrival in the UK, Trump was secretly transferred back to the older Air Force One before descending publicly, then boarded the newer Qatar-donated Boeing 747-8 to return to Washington.
U.S. officials told CBS News and other outlets that intelligence had detected a credible Iranian threat to fire a missile at the president's aircraft. The New York Times reported that U.S. intelligence had information of a person near the NATO summit who had been seen with a shoulder-fired missile. Trump confirmed the operation was ordered by the Secret Service and military but said he did not ask detailed questions about the threat. "I guess there was a threat out there. I didn't really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats," he told reporters on August 11. He added that he believed the aircraft he actually flew on "was in greater risk" than the decoy plane.
The operation has sparked significant controversy. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal called it "unprecedented and surreal" and requested congressional briefings, raising concerns about whether those left aboard the decoy plane faced mortal danger. Media observers and journalism ethics experts noted that reporters and staff were deliberately misled and effectively used as decoys. CNN anchor Jake Tapper observed that no previous White House had been known to use an aircraft full of staff and journalists as a decoy during an imminent threat. The White House has not fully confirmed details, with communications director Steven Cheung stating only that protecting the president requires "every tool at our disposal." The Secret Service and U.S. Air Force declined substantive comment, referring questions to the White House.
The incident comes amid ongoing U.S.–Iran tensions and follows U.S. military strikes on Iran in July. It also raised renewed questions about the security of Trump's new Qatar-gifted aircraft, which lacks some missile detection and countermeasure systems found on older presidential jets. Trump had announced the plane would receive additional security upgrades after the trip. The clandestine departure is believed to be unprecedented in its duration and scope; while presidents have used decoy aircraft on classified trips before (notably Bill Clinton in 2000 and Joe Biden in 2023), the press pool was typically informed afterward or in advance. In this case, the deception lasted weeks before media disclosure.
Why This Matters
The operation directly affected at least two dozen staff, journalists, and cabinet officials aboard a decoy aircraft during an alleged imminent missile threat, raising material questions about informed consent, passenger safety protocols, and precedent for press-government relations. The incident also exposed security gaps in Trump's new Qatar-donated aircraft, triggering announced upgrades. U.S.–Iran tensions and potential for future similar operations make this operationally and diplomatically consequential for presidential travel security policy and media access protocols.
