Trump confirmed the operation was ordered by the Secret Service and military but said he did not ask detailed questions about the threat. "I guess there was a threat out there. I didn't really ask too much about it. I get a lot of threats," he told reporters on August 11. He added that he believed the aircraft he actually flew on "was in greater risk" than the decoy plane.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal called it "unprecedented and surreal" and requested congressional briefings, raising concerns about whether those left aboard the decoy plane faced mortal danger. Media observers and journalism ethics experts noted that reporters and staff were deliberately misled and effectively used as decoys.
