The Summer Reading Challenge 2026, themed 'Read to the Beat,' launched across UK libraries on Saturday, 4 July, celebrating the connection between music and storytelling. Organised by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries and funded by Arts Council England, the initiative is powered by Universal Music UK and encourages children to explore books across multiple formats—including stories, poetry, graphic novels, and non-fiction—all available free to borrow from local libraries. The challenge runs until 12 September and invites families to set reading goals and earn rewards throughout the summer holidays.
Libraries nationwide, including those in Dorset and North Tyneside, are participating in the 2026 campaign. Dorset libraries launched sign-ups on 4 July, while North Tyneside libraries began their sign-up process on 11 July at community hubs and libraries. Both councils emphasised the importance of the challenge as part of the National Year of Reading, with Dorset's Cabinet Member Ben Wilson noting the initiative combines "a love of reading while encouraging young minds to explore the connection between stories, rhythm and creativity." North Tyneside's Councillor Hannah Johnson highlighted how the theme brings together "music, imagination and storytelling."
Now in its 27th year, the Summer Reading Challenge is one of the UK's largest annual reading programmes. Last year's challenge saw more than 11 million books borrowed from libraries, including audiobooks and eBooks, demonstrating its significant impact on youth engagement with reading. The 2026 theme, Read to the Beat, underscores how music and literature intersect to inspire, connect, and move audiences across age groups. Libraries throughout the UK are offering a range of free activities and themed reading materials designed to encourage young readers and make reading an enjoyable part of summer adventures.
Why This Matters
This initiative directly impacts UK families during summer holidays by providing free access to diverse reading materials while fostering children's literacy and creative engagement with both music and storytelling. As part of the National Year of Reading, it demonstrates the lasting cultural value of public library services and offers practical opportunities for young readers to discover new interests at zero cost—making it particularly significant for families with limited resources.
