Panama declares emergency after 7.7 magnitude earthquake, 200+ aftershocks
A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Panama on Friday near Herrera province, triggering over 200 aftershocks and prompting the government to declare a state of emergency. No deaths were reported, but at least 27 people were injured and nearly 900 homes damaged. Regional and international assistance, including $5 million from the United States, has been mobilized.
Quick Facts
- 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Panama
- Over 200 aftershocks recorded
- Structural damage to homes, schools, churches, hotels, and bridges
- Government declared state of emergency
- Panama Canal operations continued normally
Panama's government declared a state of emergency on Saturday following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Friday near Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera province, triggering more than 200 aftershocks across the country. The quake, centered approximately 10 kilometers southwest of the remote community at a depth of 10 kilometers, was felt intensely in Panama City and neighbouring Colombia. No deaths were reported, but at least 27 people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, and nearly 900 homes were damaged, with assessments ongoing in isolated communities cut off by landslides and road damage.
Damage was concentrated in Panama's central provinces of Herrera, Cocle, Veraguas, and Los Santos. Officials documented approximately 420 damaged homes, 420 damaged public schools, seven affected hotels, at least 13 damaged churches, and nine damaged bridges. In La Villa de Los Santos, a colonial-era community 64 kilometers northeast of the epicenter, homes and a historical Catholic church collapsed. President Jose Raul Mulino visited affected regions to oversee relief operations and called for urgent repairs to damaged roads and bridges. The government authorized allocation of up to $100 million in relief funds within its 2026 fiscal framework.
The Panama Canal announced that shipping operations continued normally despite the earthquakes, with emergency protocols activated and inspections underway. Tocumen International Airport temporarily closed. Seismologists recorded aftershocks with magnitudes reaching 6.0, with the University of Panama's Institute of Geosciences confirming that aftershock frequency was decreasing and intervals between shocks lengthening. Structural integrity may have been preserved by Panama's strict building codes, particularly for high-rise construction in the capital.
International assistance mobilized rapidly. The United States pledged $5 million in humanitarian aid and deployed a 20-member disaster response team to assist with search and rescue operations and infrastructure assessments. The US military's Southern Command deployed two helicopters that delivered 2,000 pounds of food to affected populations. Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador, and Colombia all offered assistance. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the State Department was mobilizing resources and personnel, while US Ambassador Kevin Marino Cabrera coordinated the assistance effort.
Why This Matters
Panama's critical Panama Canal shipping route experienced operational disruption assessment; no traffic halts were reported, but infrastructure damage to roads, bridges, and buildings (420 homes, 420 schools, 13 churches, 9 bridges) affects reconstruction timelines and regional supply chains. The government allocated up to $100 million in relief funds and activated international assistance from the US ($5 million), Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador, and Colombia. Ongoing aftershocks (magnitude up to 6.0) and damage assessments in isolated communities cut off by landslides will determine full economic and humanitarian impact over the coming weeks.
