Australian police have charged a third suspect in connection with a December 2024 arson attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne, which authorities allege was directed by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The 20-year-old man, one of three masked offenders who broke into the synagogue in the early hours of December 6, 2024, was charged with arson and other offenses. The attackers doused the synagogue's interior with flammable liquid and set it ablaze, causing extensive damage and injuring a worshipper.
The suspect was charged while already in custody in a Melbourne jail on unrelated offenses. Two co-accused have previously been arrested: Giovanni Laulu, 21, in July 2024, and Younes Ali Younes, 20, a month later. The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which combines federal and state police with Australia's spy agency, led the investigation. The latest suspect is scheduled to appear in court next week on the new charges.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has accused Iran's Revolutionary Guard of directing both this synagogue attack and an earlier arson at Lewis' Continental Kitchen, a kosher eatery in Sydney. Mike Burgess, director-general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, stated that the Revolutionary Guard employed a "complex web of proxies to hide its involvement" in both antisemitic attacks. In response, Australia expelled Iran's ambassador and three other Iranian diplomats. Iran has categorically denied the allegations.
Investigators are examining whether the three alleged arsonists were aware of who ordered the attack. Assistant Commissioner Peter Crozier indicated this remains a key line of inquiry, as the suspects may not know the principals directing the operation. Investigators are working with international partners as the investigation continues. Victoria Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul O'Halloran expressed sympathy for the local Jewish community, stating that "people deserve the right to feel safe and be safe in their community and particularly at their place of worship."
The case occurs amid a broader government inquiry into rising antisemitism across Australia, including a December attack on a Sydney Hanukkah celebration that killed 15 people when two gunmen opened fire.
Why This Matters
This case reveals a sophisticated state-sponsored attack on a religious institution and raises critical questions about the reach of foreign intelligence operations within Australia. For readers, it demonstrates the government's commitment to counterterrorism and protecting vulnerable communities, while also highlighting the complex challenge of prosecuting attacks involving covert operational chains where proxies may not know their ultimate sponsors. The broader context of rising antisemitism in Australia makes this prosecution symbolically important for community reassurance.
