An 8-year-old girl was killed by her stepmother in Valpaços, Portugal, in what authorities say was a premeditated act of revenge. The stepmother suffocated the child and abandoned her body in a mountainous area near Vila Pouca de Aguiar. The girl's father reported her missing to police at around 20:30 on Tuesday evening, and the Judicial Police discovered the body in the early hours of Wednesday morning near a backpack along a roadside in the serra.
The stepmother confessed to the crime when questioned by the Judicial Police and provided information about the location of the body. According to investigation details, the crime was planned and intended to appear as an abduction. The stepmother was taking the girl to school when the killing occurred in the parish of Friões, Valpaços municipality, in Vila Real district.
The motive for the crime appears to be rooted in ongoing family conflict. Tensions had escalated following a disagreement between the stepmother's son and the victim that led to the boy being struck. The girl's father sided with his daughter, which angered the stepmother. The stepmother reportedly resented that her partner favored his biological daughter over her own son. The couple's relationship had ended and reconciled multiple times prior to this incident.
The stepmother was taken into custody by authorities at her home. She was scheduled to appear before the Chaves court for questioning. The girl's body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine for autopsy.
