AJ Dybantsa Leads Strong 2026 NBA Draft Class; White House Photo Was Coincidental
AJ Dybantsa, the 6-foot-9 BYU star who led the nation in scoring, is the favorite to be selected No. 1 by the Washington Wizards in the 2026 NBA Draft, despite a childhood White House photo sparking speculation. He clarified the image was coincidental. The draft class, which also includes Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer, is considered one of the strongest in recent years.

AJ Dybantsa, the 6-foot-9 forward from Brigham Young University who led the nation in scoring, is widely expected to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Washington Wizards in the 2026 NBA Draft. However, a Father's Day post showing a childhood photo of Dybantsa in front of the White House — the residence of the team holding the top pick — was not a hidden clue about his draft destination. Dybantsa clarified that the image was chosen simply because an earlier baby picture showed him naked.
"Actually, it was just a random photo that I found," Dybantsa said. "I was going to do one and I was a baby, but I was naked, so I didn't want to do that one. So the next one to the right just happened to be in front of the White House."
The 19-year-old Dybantsa, who drew comparisons to Kevin Durant, averaged 25.5 points per game and shot 51 percent from the floor in his lone season at BYU. He became just the fifth college player in 40 years to average at least 25 points while shooting 50 percent or better. Despite his dominance, the Wizards' front office is reportedly weighing Dybantsa against Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, who averaged 20.2 points but dealt with health issues including severe cramping that limited him to 11 missed games.
The draft class as a whole is considered one of the strongest in recent memory. Cameron Boozer, the Duke forward and college player of the year, said: "I think this draft top to bottom is elite... I think our draft is really strong, stronger than a lot of classes that came before us." Other top prospects include North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson, while the Los Angeles Clippers at No. 5 are expected to choose among guards Keaton Wagler, Darius Acuff Jr., or Mikel Brown Jr.
Dybantsa — who attended Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks staged the biggest comeback in finals history — is ready to become a franchise cornerstone. "Craziest game I've ever watched in real life," he said of the 29-point rally. With the Wizards holding the top pick for the first time in their recent rebuild, Dybantsa is seen as the kind of dynamic superstar Washington has lacked since Chris Webber's tenure.
The Wizards are not trading the pick, and while Dybantsa's defense needs refinement, his ability to attack the rim, draw fouls (a nation-leading 296 free-throw attempts), and create for teammates is expected to translate immediately. The Utah Jazz hold the No. 2 pick, followed by the Memphis Grizzlies and Chicago Bulls.
