Oura launches Ring 5 smart ring with slimmer design and advanced health monitoring at $399

Oura unveiled its fifth-generation smart ring on Thursday, featuring a significantly thinner and lighter design that the company claims is the world's smallest smart ring. The Ring 5, priced from $399, represents a major redesign compared to its predecessor, with the device 40% smaller overall. The ring achieves this reduction through a complete architectural overhaul of mechanical, electrical, optical, battery, and sensing components, with width reduced by approximately two millimeters and thickness cut by roughly 30%.

The new smart ring comes with extended battery life, lasting between six to nine days compared to five to eight days on the Ring 4. Oura redesigned its sensors for improved skin contact and upgraded LED technology to increase accuracy across diverse finger sizes and skin tones. The Ring 5 launches in six finishes—Silver, Brushed Silver, Black, Stealth, a redesigned Gold with a truer gold tone, and an updated Deep Rose with a copper-like appearance. The Black and Silver versions retail at $399, while premium finishes cost $499, representing a $50 increase from the Ring 4's starting price.

Accompanying the hardware launch, Oura introduced new software features available to Ring 5 and earlier-generation Ring 3 users. The company unveiled "Health Radar," a monitoring system designed to surface patterns in key biometric signals. Two foundational capabilities launched with this feature: Blood Pressure Signals, which continuously detects blood pressure patterns during sleep to identify potential cardiovascular strain, and Nighttime Breathing, which provides 30-day rolling views of sleep-related breathing patterns. Members can also log actual blood pressure readings from external cuffs directly within the Oura app.

Oura is expanding beyond data insights into direct healthcare through a partnership with Counsel Health, an on-demand platform combining artificial intelligence with licensed physicians. This integration allows Ring members to ask health questions and receive personalized medical advice within the Oura app. The Ring 5 is available for preorder immediately and will begin shipping on June 4, with sizes ranging from 6 to 13.

The launch reflects intensifying competition in the smart ring market. New subscription-free competitors including RingConn and Ultrahuman have prompted Oura to accelerate its release cycle, launching the Ring 5 just 18 months after the Ring 4—a significantly shorter interval than the approximately three-year gap between previous generations. The Ring 5 announcement arrives one day before RingConn's Gen 3 smart ring begins shipping, underscoring the competitive pressure driving rapid innovation in the space.
