Tencent Integrates AI Agent Into WeChat Pay for Autonomous Shopping

Tencent Holdings Ltd. announced the integration of its desktop artificial intelligence agent, WorkBuddy, into WeChat Pay on Wednesday, enabling users to delegate purchase decisions and transactions to the AI system. The integration initially focuses on local lifestyle services, particularly group-buying deals on Meituan, allowing the AI agent to search for nearby dining offers and initiate purchases based on user location and preferences.

The WorkBuddy system operates through a multi-step verification process designed to balance automation with user control. When prompted by users, the desktop client searches for available deals and generates personalized recommendations. The agent then initiates payment using a dedicated AI card linked to WeChat Pay and waits for final confirmation from the user's mobile phone before completing the transaction, allowing deals to be redeemed in-store.

The move reflects intensifying competition among Chinese technology companies to embed autonomous AI agents into their dominant "super apps" — integrated platforms combining messaging, payments, e-commerce and other services. By embedding AI purchasing capabilities directly into WeChat Pay's ecosystem, Tencent aims to streamline consumer services while positioning itself at the forefront of the next generation of digital commerce gateways. The integration represents a significant step toward automating everyday transactions within China's largest mobile payment platform.
