Jhon Córdoba Asserts Position as Colombia's Key Striker Option for World Cup

Jhon Córdoba, Colombia's 188-centimeter centre forward, has reestablished himself as a vital attacking option for the national team ahead of the World Cup. The Chocó-born striker is competing with Luis Javier Suárez for the starting number 9 position as Colombia prepares for the tournament.

Córdoba endured a challenging qualifying campaign marked by criticism for missing clear scoring opportunities, including a particularly notable miss against Ecuador where the goalkeeper was already beaten. However, he has vindicated himself in recent matches by scoring crucial goals, including strikes against Bolivia and in Colombia's 6-3 victory over Venezuela. Across 19 appearances under coach Lorenzo in qualifying, Copa América, and friendlies, Córdoba has accumulated six goals.

The striker's physical attributes make him well-suited to Colombia's offensive and direct style of play. Standing at 188 centimeters with considerable strength, Córdoba excels at winning aerial duels and serving as a primary physical reference point in attack. Córdoba's footballing heritage runs deep—his father, Manuel Acisclo Córdoba, was a notable striker in Colombian football during the 1980s and 1990s. Jhon emerged from Envigado's prestigious youth academy before beginning his professional career. After a brief stint with Mexican club Chiapas, he moved to Europe in 2013, playing for Spanish clubs Espanyol and Granada before establishing himself in Germany with Mainz, Cologne, and Hertha Berlin. He joined Russian club Krasnodar in 2021 and has become their all-time leading goalscorer, recording 14 goals and 5 assists in the 2025-26 season.
