Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro Jaya) confirmed that a demonstration at the South Intersection of Monas (National Monument) in Central Jakarta on June 18, 2026, proceeded safely, orderly, and under control. Approximately 800 protesters from two separate groups participated in the action at the Gambir area location. The first group, the East Jakarta Community Alliance, comprised around 500 people who called for the prosecution of those involved in corruption within the MBG (Mortgage Guarantee Program) and demanded the continuation of the program itself. The second group, from the Chemical Energy and Mining Leadership Unit of the All-Indonesia Workers' Union at PT Indobuildco's The Sultan Hotel & Residence, consisted of approximately 300 people and dispersed by noon before returning to the hotel. Metro Police Head of Public Relations Kombes Pol. Budi Hermanto stated that police personnel were deployed to facilitate the exercise of free expression while ensuring other public activities proceeded without disruption. He added that the situation at the parliament building complex, including both front and rear entrances and the Pancasila Gate, reported no protest activity, indicating that demonstrations across the Metro Police jurisdiction remained orderly and manageable.
Why This Matters
This protest highlights growing public scrutiny of Indonesia's Mortgage Guarantee Program (MBG) amid corruption allegations, while demonstrating that the government can accommodate dissent without disruption. For investors and policymakers, it signals that governance and program integrity remain key issues, but that Jakarta's security apparatus can manage peaceful protests effectively, minimizing operational risk for ongoing projects.
