The certification process was notably more demanding than international standards, requiring testing of 78 engine assemblies—more than twice the number typically used in global practice. According to Ilya Konyukhov, CEO of UEC-Saturn, the manufacturer of the engine, Russian aviation standards impose conservative testing approaches that prioritize full-scale bench tests over digital simulations. "The results obtained using digital twins cannot replace actual bench tests, but merely supplement the evidence base," Konyukhov stated, noting that the company completed all required assessments within a relatively short timeframe.
The testing methodology involved disassembling and inspecting each engine for defects after every testing stage before reassembling it for continued evaluation. The PD-8 engine, developed using advanced technologies and domestically produced materials at UEC-Saturn's Rybinsk facility, produces eight tons of thrust and is designed for both the SJ-100 short-haul aircraft and the Be-200 amphibious aircraft. The company is now awaiting issuance of the type certificate, which will formally certify the engine's compliance with established standards.
