Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on the city of Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region on Tuesday, June 23, killing three people and injuring at least 19 others, according to local authorities. The attack targeted industrial infrastructure and civilian facilities, causing multiple fires and significant damage.
Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council, reported that the strike occurred around midday, with explosions heard across the city. "There are serious injuries; all have been taken to hospitals and are on the operating table. Doctors are doing everything possible and fighting for their lives," Vilkul said in a statement. The Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration confirmed the attack, initially reporting one fatality before the death toll rose to three.
The Ukrainian Air Force had warned of ballistic missile threats from Crimea shortly before the attack. In addition to the human casualties, the strike damaged industrial infrastructure, a non-operational building, an excavator, and a car. Emergency services extinguished several fires that broke out at the scene.
Earlier that day, Ukraine's air defense forces intercepted 118 out of 135 Russian Shahed drones launched overnight, with 13 drones hitting targets and debris causing damage in three other locations. This latest strike on Kryvyi Rih underscores the ongoing threat to Ukrainian cities from Russian ballistic and drone attacks.
Topics
Why This Matters
This attack highlights the persistent vulnerability of Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure to Russian long-range precision strikes, even as air defenses intercept most drones. The inclusion of both industrial targets and non-operational buildings suggests a broad targeting strategy that complicates evacuation and recovery efforts. For readers watching the war’s trajectory, it underscores the need for sustained Western air defense support and the inadequacy of partial interception alone.
