A former employee has been accused of shooting two young men at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware on Tuesday afternoon, killing one and injuring the other, according to authorities. The suspect, identified as John Wallace-Bey, 23, of New Castle, Delaware, had been fired from his job at the hospital earlier that day, a source confirmed.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. on June 16 near the hospital's cafeteria, located along the 500 block of West 14th Street in Wilmington. Police described the incident as an isolated and targeted attack. Both victims were 19-year-old males and also employees of the hospital, according to a spokesperson for ChristianaCare. One victim died from his injuries, while the other was listed in critical but stable condition. Officials have not yet released the name of the deceased.
Following the shooting, the hospital was placed on lockdown and a massive police response ensued. Investigators determined that Wallace-Bey fled the scene in a white Toyota RAV4. Law enforcement used technology to track the vehicle from Wilmington to the 800 block of West Wellens Street in Philadelphia. Surveillance video showed the RAV4 arriving in Philadelphia at 6:21 p.m., where a woman approached the driver and another woman later exited the vehicle.
Police later observed Wallace-Bey leaving a home in the area and entering the passenger side of a 2020 Toyota Sienna operating as an Uber. Officers stopped the vehicle at 9th Street and Lindley Avenue in Philadelphia, taking Wallace-Bey into custody. He will be extradited to Delaware to face charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.
Court documents indicate Wallace-Bey had no prior legal issues. Neighbors and coworkers described him as quiet and introverted. Vynisha Richardson, a fellow employee at Wilmington Hospital, noted that Wallace-Bey was an IT intern and expressed concern about security measures, stating that employees could bypass metal detectors by showing a badge at a certain entrance. The hospital's lockdown was eventually lifted and it remains fully operational.
