The Washington Nationals recalled catcher Harry Ford from Triple-A Rochester on Friday to make his debut with the team following an injury to backup catcher Drew Millas. Millas was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a fractured left index finger, an injury that has plagued him since 2025. Ford, acquired from the Seattle Mariners in an offseason trade that sent reliever Jose A. Ferrer to Seattle, was batting .223 with a .705 OPS through 58 games at Rochester this season but showed significant improvement in recent weeks, posting an .860 OPS over his last 33 games.
Ford, 23, made his MLB debut as a member of the Mariners last September and appeared in eight games during the 2025 postseason, including one at-bat in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series. He is the Nationals' No. 7 prospect and was the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft from a Georgia high school. According to sources, Ford has been playing through a shoulder injury that affected his early-season production, but his offensive performance improved considerably over June and July at the minor-league level.
Ford caught and batted sixth in Friday's series opener against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. He is expected to split time behind the plate with Keibert Ruiz as the Nationals attempt to return to .500 in the second half of the season. Washington entered the second half at 48–49, four games out in the National League Wild Card race after going 9–14 in its final 23 games before the All-Star break.
Nationals manager Blake Butera expressed optimism about Ford's addition. The team also activated reliever Max Kranick, signed to a major-league deal in May, as it addresses ongoing bullpen concerns. The Nationals lead MLB with 27 blown saves this season.

Why This Matters
The Nationals face a roster depth test with backup catcher Drew Millas sidelined by a fractured left index finger. Ford's recall provides short-term catching depth but also signals potential reliance on a prospect (No. 7 ranked) with limited MLB experience (8 postseason games in 2025) to stabilize a team at 48–49 record, four games out in the Wild Card race. The activation of reliever Max Kranick simultaneously addresses a bullpen crisis—MLB-leading 27 blown saves. Measurable outcome: roster composition, catchers available, and bullpen effectiveness will directly affect playoff positioning in the second half.
