Kyle Kennedy, an educator and granddaughter of Robert F. "Bobby" Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, died on September 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, at age 42. Her cause of death remains pending and under investigation, according to her death certificate obtained by multiple outlets.
Kennedy was born on July 6, 1984, in Washington, D.C., to Michael Kennedy (who died in a 1997 skiing accident) and Victoria Denise Gifford. She earned a history degree from Georgetown University, followed by a Master of Science in Early Education from Pace University and a Master of Education in Education Policy and Management from Harvard University. She began her career as a Teach For America instructor in New York City public schools and later worked as an educational consultant and coach, focusing on equitable elementary education and curriculum reform for disadvantaged students.
In August 2012, Kennedy married Liam Kerr at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston. The couple had three children together: twins Conor and Josie (born around 2014), though Josie died days after birth. They later had a second son, Declan. The couple divorced; her death certificate lists her marital status as divorced, and her obituary refers to Kerr as her "former husband."
In 2020, Kennedy suffered a severe spinal cord injury that resulted in long-term paralysis. Prior to the injury, she had completed the 2019 Boston Marathon. In her final years, she became an advocate for disability rights and healthcare equity, testifying at the Massachusetts State House during a hearing on discrimination in healthcare for people with disabilities. She navigated her mobility challenges while raising her two surviving sons and maintaining her involvement in educational and disability advocacy work.
Kennedy is survived by her sons Conor (12) and Declan (10), her mother Victoria Denise Gifford, her siblings Michael and Rory, and several nieces and nephews. She was one of 34 grandchildren of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy.
Why This Matters
Kyle Kennedy's death at 42 concludes the life of a second-generation member of the Kennedy family and an educator who worked in public school equity and disability advocacy. Her 2020 paralysis from spinal cord injury marked a shift to healthcare and disability policy advocacy at the state level. She is survived by two sons; her death certificate lists cause pending investigation.
