Kieron Pollard named Mumbai Indians head coach for IPL 2027

Mumbai Indians have appointed Kieron Pollard as head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season, promoting him from his role as batting coach. Pollard, a 39-year-old former West Indies all-rounder, replaces Mahela Jayawardene, who departed the franchise on October 17, 2026. The appointment marks Pollard's transition to his first head coaching position after four seasons as MI's batting coach.

Pollard has an extensive association with Mumbai Indians spanning 16 years. He joined the franchise as a player in 2010 and retired from playing in 2022, compiling 3,412 runs across 189 matches at a strike rate of 147.32, along with 69 wickets. He was part of all five of MI's IPL title-winning campaigns in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, as well as two CLT20 victories in 2011 and 2013. After stepping away from playing, Pollard remained with the franchise in a coaching capacity.

In a statement, Pollard expressed his commitment to the role. "It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians," he said. "MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold."

Franchise owner Nita Ambani welcomed the appointment. "Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family," she said. "As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game. Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan."

Mumbai Indians are seeking to reverse recent performance declines. The franchise has won no titles since 2020 and reached the playoffs only once under captain Hardik Pandya since his return in 2024. Pollard's immediate responsibilities include finalizing player retentions ahead of the auction scheduled for December in Goa. The coaching staff also includes Sachin Tendulkar as an icon, with Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey as bowling coaches, alongside support personnel from performance, medical, and data analysis roles.
