Indonesian Ferry Capsizes in Java Sea; 129 Missing, 6 Dead

The KM Virgo Transport 8, a 390-foot passenger ferry built in Japan in 1987, capsized in Indonesia's Java Sea early Sunday, September 13, 2026, during severe weather. The vessel was carrying 243 people—213 passengers and 30 crew members—when it lost contact at approximately 2 a.m. local time while traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. The ship encountered waves up to 3–4 metres high and rough seas while navigating waters off Masalembo, approximately 92 miles from Banjarmasin.

According to survivors and authorities, the ferry listed rapidly without warning. Rizky Apriansyah, a waiter onboard, reported the vessel was heeling at roughly 30 degrees when friends woke him to grab a life jacket. He recalled no alarm or warning announcements before the ship capsized in minutes. "It only took minutes for the ship to capsize, even less than 10 minutes," Apriansyah said. When the vessel overturned, Apriansyah and four friends were swept into the sea, where they clung to a floating 12-kilogram cooking gas cylinder approximately 15 metres from the ship. They waited about 10 hours before being rescued by another vessel.

As of Monday evening, rescue teams had retrieved 108 survivors and recovered 6 bodies, leaving 129 people missing. By Tuesday, 17 ships and aircraft were deployed carrying approximately 655 personnel from military, police, and other agencies. Authorities deployed specialized underwater teams and navy-operated thermal drones to accelerate search efforts. Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, stated: "We remain hopeful of finding more survivors." The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation later clarified that the vessel had capsized but had not fully sunk, lying at a depth of approximately 30 metres. Authorities were considering raising the wreck to shallower waters to assist recovery operations.

Survivors reported that the ferry appeared overcrowded, with passengers sleeping in hallways and common areas because cabins were full. Ahmad Saudi, another survivor and bus driver, speculated the ferry's balance may have been affected by trucks loaded on one side, and noted that no alarms preceded the listing. "There were no alarms or announcements warning passengers about what was happening, many people in the cabins may not have had enough time to get out," Saudi said. The ferry company, Virgo Karya Shipping, declined immediate comment on the alarm issue, stating they needed to verify information with the crew.

Indonesian authorities have not yet determined the cause of the accident. The Chinese Consulate General in Surabaya confirmed no Chinese nationals were aboard. Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries for inter-island transportation; maritime accidents occur regularly due to factors including weather conditions, sea conditions, and vessel safety enforcement.
