Ederson Confirms Manchester United Transfer Is 'Practically Done'

Brazilian midfielder Ederson has confirmed that his transfer to Manchester United is nearing completion, despite a delay caused by his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 26-year-old, who recently joined Brazil's squad as a late call-up, told Sky in Italy: "It's practically all done. But I have to take advantage of this moment. I'm here [at the World Cup], it's a beautiful thing that must be enjoyed to the fullest."

A deal worth approximately $52 million (£39 million) was agreed between United and Serie A club Atalanta before the tournament began. Reports indicate the package includes a €40.5 million ($66.2 million) fee plus potential bonuses. Ederson has reportedly signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional year, and the move is expected to be finalized after the World Cup concludes.

Ederson made a brief appearance in Brazil's 3-0 group-stage win over Haiti, replacing Bruno Guimaraes off the bench. Speaking after the match, he emphasized the importance of focusing on the World Cup before finalizing the transfer. "I have to wait. Now I have to enjoy this moment, then we will see," he said. "Certainly, everything is almost done, but now I have to enjoy this moment. This is a wonderful experience, and you have to enjoy it the most."

The transfer comes as Manchester United, now managed by Michael Carrick, prioritize midfield reinforcements following Casemiro's departure. The club has already sold Casemiro and is expected to part ways with Manuel Ugarte, leaving Kobbie Mainoo as the only natural midfielder in the squad. United are actively seeking at least one more midfielder, with West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes reportedly at the top of their list, while alternatives include Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Sandro Tonali, and Carlos Baleba.

Ederson has spent four successful seasons at Atalanta, making 180 appearances in all competitions and scoring 16 goals. He ranks fifth among Serie A players for tackles over that period, with 187, and helped the club win the UEFA Europa League in the 2023-2024 season by defeating Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
