World No. 1 Elena Rybakina advanced to the BNB Ningbo Open final on Saturday with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over sixth-seeded Diana Shnaider. Rybakina, the defending champion and three-time Grand Slam winner, required 11 set points to secure the opening set after struggling on serve at 5-3. In the second set, she was broken to love while serving for the match at 5-4 but recovered immediately to break back and clinch the win on her second match point at 6-5.
Leylah Fernandez reached her tenth career WTA final by defeating Marie Bouzkova with an identical 6-3, 7-5 scoreline. The Canadian world No. 30 dominated the opening set, broke early in the second for a 2-0 lead, and prevailed after an extended arm-wrestling second set that lasted just under two hours. Fernandez arrives in the final on strong form, having won 11 of her last 12 matches since the start of the Asian swing, including her first title of the season in Singapore last month.
Rybakina and Fernandez have faced five times previously, with Rybakina holding a 3-2 head-to-head advantage. Their most recent meeting came at the Stuttgart quarterfinals earlier this season, where Rybakina won 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(6) in a three-hour epic after saving two match points. The final will be contested on hard court at the WTA 500 tournament.
For Rybakina, a second consecutive Ningbo title would mark the first time she has won a tournament in back-to-back years. Victory would also secure her fourth title of the season and 15th of her career, while substantially strengthening her position to secure the year-end No. 1 ranking. Rybakina had missed the previous week's Wuhan Open due to a foot injury but showed resilience in Saturday's semifinal despite serving inconsistently, including six aces and a total of double-faults between both players.
Fernandez, seeking her second title in two months, would claim her seventh career title and third WTA 500 crown if victorious. She has earned a tour-leading 16 WTA 500 match wins this season. The winner will receive 500 ranking points and $185,500, while the runner-up takes 325 ranking points and $114,500. Rybakina is defending the 500 points she earned as last year's champion.
