Professor Aleksandar Marinov, a prominent sociologist and political figure, has been appointed as an advisor in the political cabinet of Bulgaria's Vice Prime Minister and Finance Minister Galub Donev. The announcement came through an official statement from the political party "Bulgaria Can," of which Marinov was a co-founder.
Marinov leaves his position with "Bulgaria Can" to take up the new role. The party expressed gratitude for his contributions, stating: "With gratitude for his dedicated work, professionalism, and contribution to the party's causes, we send Professor Aleksandar Marinov to his new challenge. We thank him for his support in building the organization for the protection of Bulgarian national interest." Party leadership wished him health and success in his new endeavor serving Bulgaria and its citizens.
Marinov brings extensive political experience to the position. He has been active in Bulgarian politics since 1990, when he became a member of the Bulgarian Socialist Party's Supreme Council and later served as a deputy in several parliaments. In 1996, he left the Socialist Party prominently and founded the Bulgarian Liberal-Socialist Union. He subsequently held academic positions at Sofia University. Most notably, Marinov served as chairman of the Presidential Strategic Council during President Rumen Radev's first term, where he functioned as a key ideologist formulating the presidency's positions against systemic political parties and criticism of the political status quo.
The Strategic Council was later quietly closed, and Marinov was removed from his position. In September 2024, Marinov reemerged as an organizer of "Bulgaria Can," a political project associated with Kuzman Iliev that positions itself as a defender of "modern, pro-Bulgarian conservatism." The party had previously been considered as a potential platform for Radev's participation in parliamentary elections.
Marinov's political record also includes a disclosure from the Commission on Files revealing that he served as a State Security informant during the 1983–1990 period under the pseudonym "The Master," operating a safe house. His appointment to Donev's cabinet represents his return to senior government advisory roles after his departure from the Presidential Strategic Council.
Why This Matters
Marinov's appointment signals a significant political realignment in Bulgaria's government structure. As a veteran political strategist and ideologist who previously shaped presidential policy, his move to the Finance Ministry suggests potential shifts in economic and political direction. His dual role as a co-founder of "Bulgaria Can" and now a senior government advisor underscores the complex interplay between parliamentary politics and the executive branch, with implications for Bulgaria's governance trajectory and policy consistency under current leadership.
