Apple unveiled the HomeView on October 13, 2026, a 7-inch smart display and speaker priced at $299, marking its most direct entry into the competitive smart display market dominated by Amazon Echo Show and Google Nest Hub devices. The device features a Liquid Retina touchscreen, runs on the Apple A18 chip, and serves as a central hub for home control and family access. Available for preorder immediately with general availability beginning November 13, the HomeView comes in four colors (silver, starlight, rose pink, space gray) and offers both countertop and wall-mounted configurations.
The HomeView integrates facial recognition technology to identify up to six household members, automatically adapting the display to show personalized apps, notifications, messages, calendar events, and reminders for each recognized user. The device includes a 12-megapixel camera with Center Stage technology for FaceTime calls, far-field microphones for voice commands, and speakers supporting Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. It can monitor up to nine security camera feeds simultaneously and control compatible HomeKit devices including lights, locks, thermostats, and smart blinds through voice commands to Siri AI.
The HomeView runs Apple's updated Siri AI assistant, which leverages personal context from connected iPhones or iPads to provide contextual responses and information. Apple emphasizes privacy, stating that camera and microphone data are processed separately from other systems and cannot be accessed by apps or Apple. The device supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and Matter connectivity standards. The display can automatically adjust brightness from 500 nits peak to 0.3 nits minimum, making it suitable for nightstands and other sensitive locations.
Apple simultaneously announced complementary products including the HomePod Mini 2 ($149), an updated Apple TV 4K, and a new line of smart home accessories developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. These accessories include LG cameras, door locks, and doorbells designed to integrate seamlessly with the HomeView ecosystem. The announcement represents a significant strategic shift for Apple under new CEO John Ternus, as the company has historically held only 5.2% of the smart speaker market as of 2025, compared to Amazon's 40.9% and Google's 29%. The device will not be available in the European Union due to regulations around Siri AI functionality.
Why This Matters
Apple enters the smart display market—which generated $8.4B in global revenue in 2025 and is dominated by Amazon (40.9% share) and Google (29%)—with integrated HomeKit control, facial recognition, and privacy-focused AI features. The $299 price point and November 13 availability affect consumer purchasing decisions in home automation. The product ecosystem (HomePod Mini 2, Apple TV 4K, LG/Schneider Electric accessories) signals Apple's commitment to capturing market share in a category where it held only 5.2% as of 2025. European unavailability due to Siri AI regulations creates geographic trade restrictions on distribution.
