The National Art Center in Roppongi, Tokyo will host the "Louvre Museum Exhibition: Renaissance" from September 9 to December 13, 2026, showcasing over 50 masterpieces from the Louvre's collection. The exhibition's flagship work is Leonardo da Vinci's "La Belle Ferronnière" (officially titled "Portrait of a Woman"), making its Japanese debut 52 years after the Louvre's "Mona Lisa" was displayed in Japan in 1974. The painting is one of only approximately 15 authenticated Leonardo works in existence, with the Louvre holding five of them.
Japanese actress Kieko Kitagawa has been appointed as the exhibition's ambassador and will provide the audio guide narration. Kitagawa, who has long been passionate about art and museums, travelled to France to film at the Louvre ahead of the exhibition. She described viewing "La Belle Ferronnière" during filming as a powerful experience, remarking on the intensity of the figure's gaze and the fine details that held her attention. The appointment came as a pleasant surprise to her, saying "I never thought it would be me."
The exhibition is organized into four sections: "Journey," "Innovation and Refinement of Technique," "Gaze Toward Antiquity," and "The Rise of Portrait Art." It spans works from the late 15th to late 16th centuries, focusing on the spread of Renaissance style across Europe rather than solely its origins. The collection features renowned masters including Botticelli, Titian, Dürer, Cranach, and El Greco, showcasing diverse artistic expressions from painting to woodcuts, engravings, bronze sculpture, medals, ceramics, and tapestries.
The exhibition represents an unprecedented achievement in the current international climate. National Art Center Director Shigeo Sugaya described the event as "nearly a miracle" given current geopolitical circumstances, aircraft availability for international transport, and currency fluctuations. This marks the fifth Louvre Museum exhibition organized by the partnership between the Louvre and Nippon Television since 2005. The exhibition's theme music, titled "Forma," was composed specifically for the event by pianist Hayato Sumino, who studied in France. Exhibition merchandise, including a tumbler designed by Kitagawa, is in development.
Why This Matters
This exhibition brings one of the world's rarest Renaissance treasures—one of only ~15 authenticated Leonardo works—to Japan for the first time in over five decades, offering unprecedented access to masterpieces that shape global artistic heritage. For Japanese audiences, it demonstrates continued international cultural cooperation despite geopolitical challenges and provides a tangible economic and soft-power opportunity for museums and cultural institutions. The involvement of a prominent Japanese actress as ambassador amplifies reach beyond traditional art circles, making this a culturally and diplomatically significant event.
