Arsenal had made Rogers their primary transfer target this summer and were in regular contact with Aston Villa, but proved unwilling to match Chelsea's valuation. Rogers stated a preference for Chelsea, where new manager Xabi Alonso and the club's project held significant appeal. The deal represents a substantial return for Middlesbrough, who sold Rogers to Villa in February 2024 for approximately £15 million; they are entitled to 20 per cent of any profit, netting them over £20 million from the Chelsea transfer.

At Aston Villa, Rogers established himself as a key attacking player over two seasons, scoring 31 goals and registering 29 assists in 125 appearances. He featured in six World Cup matches for England and was the Europa League Player of the Year last season as Villa won the competition. The transfer also comes as Aston Villa prepare for their own squad changes, having sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and signed replacements including Johan Manzambi and João Gomes.

Chelsea's signing comes under new manager Xabi Alonso and represents a statement of intent for the club, which finished 10th in the Premier League last season.
