Explosion in Athens Kills Six, Including Four American Tourists
A devastating explosion destroyed a two-story building in Athens' Plaka district on Friday, killing six people including four American tourists and an elderly British-Greek couple, and injuring three others. Authorities suspect a major natural gas leak caused the blast, which also damaged neighboring buildings and prompted evacuations.

A powerful explosion destroyed a two-story residential building in Athens' historic Plaka district on Friday morning, killing six people and injuring three others. The blast occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time on Lysikratous Street, near the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis.
The six victims included four American tourists staying in a ground-floor short-term rental apartment, an elderly British man and his Greek wife who lived on the second floor. The four Americans — described as two couples — had been scheduled to depart on a 3 p.m. flight from Athens airport that day but never arrived. Documents and belongings recovered with the four victims confirmed their U.S. citizenship. The elderly couple had been residents of the building.
Three people were injured in the blast: two women rescued from an adjacent building on Lysikratous Street and one passerby. All three were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Rescue teams with 30 firefighters, three search dogs, and thermal imaging cameras recovered all six bodies by Saturday afternoon. Neighboring buildings sustained extensive damage, and authorities evacuated residents from two adjacent structures that were deemed unsafe and may require demolition.
Authorities believe the explosion was caused by a major natural gas leak. Prior to the blast, residents reported smelling gas in the area. A residents' association had warned the city and utility companies about the risk of gas leaks in the Plaka neighborhood approximately one year before the explosion and requested a security exercise to test emergency response. A citizen movement also reported on social media that a resident of the affected street had alerted authorities to a gas smell over several weeks, though authorities had not yet determined the nature or origin of the substance at the time of the explosion.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle expressed condolences, stating: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of four American citizens in yesterday's explosion in central Athens." Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the incident as "an incredible disaster" and "an unimaginable catastrophe." The explosion caused damage extending along the entire street and beyond, with debris scattered as far as three blocks away. A nearby church sustained damage, with the pastor announcing that Sunday services would be held outdoors.
Why This Matters
Six deaths in a major urban explosion in central Athens affect diplomatic relations (four U.S. citizens), ongoing gas safety investigations in the Plaka district, and building safety protocols in a historically dense neighborhood. Authorities suspect preventable infrastructure failure (gas leak) after residents and a civic association had previously reported gas odors and requested emergency safety reviews. Damage assessment may require demolition of two adjacent buildings and will test emergency response capabilities in one of Europe's most visited heritage zones.
