Quick Facts
- Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow Region
- Fire outbreak at Volodarsksya fuel storage facility
- Air defense interceptions
- Temporary airport restrictions
- International flight diversions

A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow Region overnight resulted in two deaths and damaged 47 private homes across seven municipalities. According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, approximately 650 unmanned aerial vehicles targeted the region between 8:30 p.m. on October 5 and 5:00 a.m. on October 6 Moscow time. Most drones were intercepted by Russian air defenses at long range; 105 were destroyed on approach to Moscow, with an additional 39 destroyed by morning, bringing the total intercepted on final approach to 173.
A fire broke out at the Volodarsksya fuel transport and storage facility (LPDS) in Konstantinovo village, a major node in the Moscow region's fuel infrastructure connected to three major airports—Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, and Domodedovo. Local residents reported two fuel tanks were burning. The facility handles multiple types of fuel including gasoline, aviation kerosene, and diesel.
Casualties included a 20-year-old man in Radumlia and a 71-year-old resident in Lyakhovo. Nine people were injured across municipalities including Pokrovskoe, Istra, and Domodedovo, with three requiring hospitalization. The regional governor reported 185 drones destroyed over the Moscow Region. Russian air defense systems claimed to have destroyed 868 drones nationwide overnight. Moscow's airports implemented temporary restrictions during the attack, which were subsequently lifted. International flights from Turkey were diverted or delayed as a result.
According to TASS calculations, the October 5–6 attack was among the largest in two years. The largest prior attack occurred September 19–20, when over 1,600 drones targeted the region, with 450 destroyed on approach to Moscow. Other significant attacks included 600 drones on August 15–16 and 548 on September 2–3.
Ukrainian military officials did not immediately comment on the attack. President Volodymyr Zelensky previously stated that Ukraine would respond to what he characterized as Russian escalation.

Why This Matters
A large-scale drone attack disrupted Moscow Region infrastructure and air traffic. A major fuel storage facility serving three primary airports caught fire, prompting temporary flight restrictions and international diversions from Turkey. Two confirmed deaths and nine injuries affect local populations; the scale (650 aircraft) represents a significant air campaign targeting civilian and logistics nodes. Recurrence and interception rates indicate ongoing asymmetric military operations with measurable civil and economic impact.
