Italy will host the World Buffalo Congress for the first time in nearly two decades, welcoming scientists, farmers, breeders, and industry stakeholders to Sorrento in Campania from October 28-30, 2026. Despite having less than 1% of the world's buffalo population, Italy has become a global leader in buffalo dairy production through advanced technologies, precision farming methods, and the economic success of protected designation of origin (DOP) mozzarella cheese.
The 14th edition of the Congress will bring together the entire buffalo mozzarella supply chain, connecting researchers, producers, and sector stakeholders. According to Angela Salzano, president of the Scientific Committee, the event will showcase Italy's international reputation in precision livestock farming, featuring cutting-edge technologies including milking robots, automated calf feeders, and advanced sensor and imaging systems.
The three-day event will address critical topics spanning genetics, animal nutrition, animal welfare, and eco-sustainability. Key areas of focus include circular economy practices, product traceability, and sustainable production methods, with particular emphasis on Campania's renowned buffalo mozzarella cheese. The Congress has been strongly promoted by the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production at Federico II University of Naples, in cooperation with the Consortium for the Safeguard of Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese of Campania and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Southern Italy.
Beyond academic sessions, the Congress will include a buffalo tour featuring visits to zootechnical companies, providing participants with practical insights into production operations. Additional information is available at www.wbc2026.org.
Why This Matters
This Congress signals Italy's continued dominance in high-value buffalo dairy production and precision agriculture innovation despite holding less than 1% of global buffalo stock. For farmers, policymakers, and agribusiness stakeholders, the event offers critical networking and knowledge-sharing on sustainable practices, advanced technologies, and supply chain optimization—directly impacting competitiveness and profitability in the global buffalo dairy market.
