Chelsea have agreed to sign Manchester United forward Melvine Malard for £850,000, marking United's club-record sale. The 26-year-old France international will reunite with Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, her former coach at Lyon, and becomes the Blues' third summer signing.
Quick Facts
- Transfer agreement reached
- Medical to be completed
- Club-record sale for Manchester United
- Highest fee for women's player with one year left on contract
- Third summer signing for Chelsea

Chelsea have agreed to sign Manchester United forward Melvine Malard for approximately £850,000 plus add-ons, representing a club-record sale for the Red Devils. The 26-year-old France international is set to undergo a medical before completing her move to Stamford Bridge. Malard will reunite with Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, under whom she previously played at Lyon. The pair have maintained a friendship spanning more than a decade, with Bompastor having encouraged Malard to move from the island of Réunion to France as a young player.
Malard becomes Chelsea's third summer signing, following defender Katie McCabe and midfielder Manaka Matsukubo, and addresses the club's attacking needs following Sam Kerr's departure to American side Gotham FC. The 26-year-old was the primary focus of Chelsea's forward recruitment this summer and was the only forward with whom the club engaged in formal discussions and personal terms negotiations. Last season, Malard delivered 10 goals and 10 assists across 40 appearances in all competitions, including four Champions League goals that helped United reach a maiden European quarter-final. She also scored six times in 18 Women's Super League starts and was part of France's Euro 2025 squad.
Malard joined Manchester United on loan in 2023 and has since provided 23 goals across 95 appearances over three seasons. She is entering the final year of her contract, and negotiations over a new deal had stalled. Rather than risk losing a high-value player on a free transfer—a situation that occurred previously with Alessia Russo and Mary Earps—United agreed to sell. The fee represents the highest amount a women's club has received for a player with one year remaining on their contract. Manchester United intend to reinvest Malard's transfer fee into their own squad this summer, with areas of focus including defence, the forward line, and goalkeeper reinforcement.
Why This Matters
This transfer signals a major reshaping of European women's football power dynamics. Chelsea's acquisition of a proven 26-goal scorer directly addresses their forward depth following Sam Kerr's departure to MLS, while Manchester United's record fee for a player with one year remaining on contract reflects rising valuation standards in the women's game. The deal also demonstrates how managerial relationships and player development pathways—Bompastor's mentorship of Malard from Réunion to elite European football—remain central to recruitment strategy at the highest level.
