UFC 330: Islam Makhachev to defend welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev will make his first defence of the 170-pound title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330, scheduled for 15 August at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. The bout, announced on 18 June, marks a historic moment for Irish MMA, as Machado Garry becomes the first Irishman since Conor McGregor to fight for a UFC title. The last Irish fighter to compete for a major MMA belt was Karl Moore in a Bellator light-heavyweight title fight in 2024.

Makhachev (28-1), widely regarded as the world's top pound-for-pound fighter, won the welterweight belt by defeating Jack Della Maddalena last year, becoming a two-division champion after vacating the lightweight championship. He has been undefeated since 2015. A victory over Machado Garry would extend his UFC win streak to 17 fights, breaking Anderson Silva's record of 16 consecutive wins.

Machado Garry (17-1), 28, is ranked first in the UFC welterweight division. Since joining the promotion in 2021 after winning the Cage Warriors welterweight belt, he has compiled a 10-1 record. His only UFC loss came against undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov in December 2024, a fight in which he became the first opponent to avoid being finished by Rakhmonov. He has since rebounded with wins over Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad, the latter in November 2025. Machado Garry fought off competition from second-ranked Prates and third-ranked Michael Morales to secure the title shot.

In the co-main event, women's strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern (16-5) will make her first title defence against Canada's Gillian Robertson (17-8). Dern claimed the vacant 115-pound belt by defeating Virna Jandiroba in October 2025. The title was vacated by Chinese fighter Zhang Weili when she moved up to flyweight. Robertson enters the bout on a five-fight winning streak, with more than half of her professional wins coming by submission.
