Bangkok Bar Fire Kills 30; Blocked Exits and Flammable Materials Cited

A fire at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao music bar in Bangkok's Chatuchak district on July 12 has killed 30 people, injured 75, and left approximately 45 missing. Firefighters controlled the blaze within 30 minutes, but rapid spread fueled by flammable ceiling and interior materials, combined with dense toxic smoke, resulted in significant casualties. Most victims were found trapped in windowless bathrooms where they may have sought shelter from flames and smoke.

Investigations reveal multiple safety violations at the venue. A fire exit near restrooms was blocked by a sugar candy table, while another emergency exit was marked "do not open (staff only)," confusing fleeing patrons. The bar held only a restaurant and live music license—not an entertainment venue permit—placing it outside regulatory zones requiring stricter fire-safety standards. Authorities found that installed ceiling and interior decoration materials were non-fire-resistant. Thai police are examining whether gas canisters in the kitchen contributed to the blast.

Initial findings point to an electrical short circuit in a ceiling air-conditioning unit as the probable trigger. A performer at the bar reported seeing smoke from a circuit breaker near the stage before power failed and an explosion occurred. The bar had undergone a safety inspection in April, but officials acknowledged that conditions may have changed since that check. Police are probing possible negligence and whether management followed safety protocols.

The fire marks Bangkok's deadliest in 17 years, reigniting concerns over chronic enforcement gaps in Thailand's entertainment-venue fire codes. Previous major incidents include the 2009 Santika club fire (67 deaths) and the 2022 Mountain B nightclub fire (26 deaths), both involving similar failures: flammable materials, blocked exits, and overcrowding. Bangkok's governor announced plans to revise building and decoration standards for music venues and restaurants with live entertainment, mandating stricter fire-resistant materials. Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin pledged a thorough investigation and said authorities would not tolerate violations if found.
