James Bourne, former Busted musician, is set to release his debut produced album 'Murder At The Gates' on July 1, following a period of serious health challenges. Bourne stepped back from the public eye in September 2025 when he withdrew from the McFly V Busted tour due to illness. In April 2026, he revealed on social media that he was awaiting a major surgery to extend his life. Despite these struggles, he has completed a project over 13 years in the making: an album created for a new musical by Tony Award-winning playwright Steven Sater.
Speaking in his only interview about the album, Bourne said, "I didn't want my health to stop me from promoting this project because I've put 13 years of my life into it." The album features 13 tracks, whittled down from 50 songs written for the musical, and includes vocals from actors such as Gaten Matarazzo of Stranger Things. Bourne described the music as "tailormade" for Sater's lyrics, blending orchestral elements with a rock band at its core, but distinct from classic rock musicals.
During the McFly V Busted tour, Bourne's brother Chris stepped in to replace him. Bandmate Matt Willis previously told Metro that performing without Bourne was difficult, saying, "We've never done a show without James and it was really hard." Bourne, however, viewed his time away as a "gift of time" that allowed him to finish the album, despite the disappointment of leaving the tour.
Bourne, 42, previously earned an Olivier nomination for his musical 'Loserville' in 2013. He has not disclosed specifics about his illness but expressed hope that the surgery would allow him to return to touring and making music. The album 'Murder At The Gates' marks his first time producing a full album and represents a culmination of years of collaboration with Sater, whom he considers a dream partner. Bourne's bandmates have not yet heard the complete album.
