At least 17 people died in a multi-vehicle collision on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Kenya early Saturday, October 3, according to police. The crash occurred at 00:10 a.m. local time in the Salama area of Makueni County when a truck driver attempted to overtake another truck traveling in the same direction. The overtaking truck clipped the rear right side of the vehicle ahead, causing it to lose control.
The out-of-control truck then swerved into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a minibus carrying 12 passengers. All 12 passengers and the minibus driver died at the scene. The truck continued and eventually struck another oncoming truck, bringing the total death toll to 17 including the first truck's driver. Seven others were injured in the collision. The minibus was carrying Catholic pilgrims, mostly women, who were traveling to a prayer site in Nakuru County, west of Nairobi.
Martin Kivuva, archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa, expressed deep sadness over the deaths in a statement. President William Ruto offered condolences to families, friends, parishioners, and the Catholic community. Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority designated the stretch as a "black spot" and called upon drivers to exercise extreme caution, avoid dangerous overtaking, and maintain strict lane discipline.
The Nairobi-Mombasa corridor is one of Kenya's major transport arteries, carrying significant logistics traffic between the port and inland regions. Road accidents are frequent along this route; police cited reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failure to wear helmets as recurring factors. Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority reported that approximately 4,000 people die on Kenyan roads annually despite ongoing government and private-sector safety campaigns.
Why This Matters
A 17-fatality highway collision in Kenya kills 12 Catholic pilgrims en route to a prayer site and raises documented road-safety risks on a major transport corridor. The Nairobi-Mombasa highway is designated a "black spot" by Kenya's transport authority; the crash reflects recurring factors (reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, alcohol use) cited in Kenya's annual road-death toll of ~4,000. Immediate measurable effects include scrutiny of truck-driver oversight, mandatory lane discipline enforcement, and heightened caution advisories on a critical logistics route between the Indian Ocean port and inland regions.
