Tuchel criticises Palmer for missing too many England camps with injuries

England manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed frustration over Cole Palmer's repeated absences from national team camps due to injuries, stating that the Chelsea forward's unavailability prevents him from demonstrating capability at international level. Speaking at a press conference on Friday ahead of England's Nations League match against Spain, Tuchel said Palmer "misses way too many camps with injuries" and that his withdrawals represent "missed opportunities" to impress.

Palmer, 24, has withdrawn from the England squad again due to fitness concerns, marking his second withdrawal since Tuchel took charge in January 2025. The Chelsea forward has featured only three times for England under Tuchel and was omitted from the World Cup squad earlier in 2026. Despite strong early-season form for Chelsea—where he has scored four goals in seven appearances—Palmer cited discomfort and pain as reasons for his withdrawal. Tuchel stated that he understands Palmer "plays with discomfort and pain, and he cannot compete at the highest level with discomfort and pain."

Tuchel emphasised that consistent presence in camp is essential for players to develop and showcase their abilities at international level. "If you're not in camp, there is a next level to impress that you cannot achieve because you can only do it when you are actually on the pitch with me," he said. The England manager clarified that Chelsea is not managing Palmer's workload for international breaks, noting that the club informed England of the withdrawal. Palmer is currently abroad completing an injury-specific training plan accompanied by a Chelsea rehabilitation coach.

Tuchel also addressed broader concerns about player commitment to international football. He rejected the notion of international breaks as mere rest periods, describing them instead as "a competitive environment" where players value togetherness and brotherhood. "We will never compromise on that. We will never let this creep in that we have the feeling that players don't want to come. We focus on the guys who absolutely want to play for England," he said.
