The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee voted 6–3 on 30 July 2026 to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.75%, marking the fifth consecutive hold in 2026. The decision came after consumer price inflation fell to 2.6% in June—a larger drop than economists had forecast—giving policymakers room to assess the economic impact of renewed US-Iran military tensions in the Middle East.
Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized the committee's cautious stance, citing "huge uncertainty" in global conditions, particularly volatile energy prices linked to Middle East conflict. He noted that while "inherited inflation persistence may be weaker than had been presumed" and the labor market continues to ease, the upside risks to energy prices remain material. Brent crude had spiked to over $100 per barrel on 23 July amid concerns about disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, before settling around $92 by the announcement date.
Three committee members—Huw Pill, Megan Greene, and Catherine Mann—voted to raise rates by 0.25 percentage points to 4%, arguing that the potential second-round effects of energy shocks on wages and prices posed too great a risk to ignore, even though no significant wage-setting or pricing pressures had yet materialized. Pill stated his concern about "catch-up dynamics in wage and price setting" that could emerge more slowly but prove more persistent.
The Bank's updated forecasts projected UK economic growth would grind to near-zero (around 0%) in the third quarter of 2026, with full-year growth estimated at 1.1%. Officials warned that inflation was expected to rise later in the year as higher energy prices continued to feed through the economy, though the committee noted monetary policy cannot control energy prices and must be calibrated to manage the adjustment process sustainably toward the 2% target.
Bailey stated the committee would "monitor the situation carefully and stand ready to adjust our stance as the evidence and our judgements on the outlook evolve." Deputy Governor Clare Lombardelli said holding rates was clearly the right decision given current conditions. Markets responded by pricing a 64.3% probability of no change at the September 2026 meeting, suggesting investors viewed the tone as dovish relative to pre-announcement expectations.
Why This Matters
The BoE's hold decision and dovish tone affect UK mortgage rates, savings returns, and pound sterling valuation across global forex and bond markets. Three dissenting votes signal internal concern about potential second-round wage and price effects from energy shocks; market pricing now shows 64.3% probability of no change in September 2026, suggesting investors expect extended policy pause. UK economic growth forecast revised to near-zero in Q3 2026 (1.1% full-year), creating headwinds for consumer spending and corporate investment. Energy price volatility tied to Middle East conflict introduces a material upside inflation risk that could force policy reversal if oil remains elevated, complicating forward guidance for businesses and households.
