Nolan's Odyssey opens to $264M as scholars debate fidelity to Homer
Christopher Nolan's Odyssey grossed $264 million in its opening weekend, becoming a commercial blockbuster despite scholarly criticism over substantial departures from Homer's original epic. Classical scholars Emily Wilson and Daniel Mendelsohn praised the film's visual ambition and performances while objecting to changes including the reduction of the gods, alteration of Odysseus's character from a witty trickster to a guilt-ridden figure, and diminishment of Penelope's role. The film also drew pre-release controversy over casting decisions, including the hiring of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as a Greek soldier.

Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's Odyssey grossed $264 million in its opening weekend, establishing itself as a major commercial success despite significant scholarly criticism of its creative departures from the ancient Greek epic.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus, with a supporting cast including Zendaya as Athena and Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy. Nolan shot the entire film on IMAX 70mm, marking the first feature photographed entirely in this format. Critics have widely praised the film's ambitious visual scale, narrative drive, and acting performances.
However, classical scholars including Emily Wilson and Daniel Mendelsohn have raised substantive concerns about the film's substantial alterations to Homer's source material. Wilson, a University of Pennsylvania professor and translator whose 2017 Odyssey translation inspired Nolan's opening line "Tell me about a complicated man," expressed frustration that the director "was trying to pack everything in while missing themes that were essential to the poem." She noted omissions including the gods Zeus and Poseidon, significant reduction of Penelope's agency, and what she described as "incoherent" messaging on war and cowardice.
Mendelsohn, himself a translator and critic at The New York Review of Books, praised Nolan's "visual panache" but objected to the transformation of Odysseus from Homer's witty trickster into a guilt-ridden, tormented figure reminiscent of protagonists in Nolan's previous films like Oppenheimer and Memento. Mendelsohn wrote: "This tormented, guilt-ridden Odysseus, stripped of humor and wit, seductiveness and cleverness, is a sibling of Memento's anguished amnesiac, of Batman, of Oppenheimer." He defended Nolan's casting of Nyong'o as Helen, calling it a worthy way to "provoke, challenge and discomfit how we think about beauty and identity."
The film also drew pre-release controversy over casting choices. Nolan faced criticism from figures including Elon Musk, who accused the director of "pissing on Homer's grave" in reference to Nyong'o's casting as Helen of Troy. Right-wing commentator Matt Walsh questioned the choice, while others noted the casting of transgender actor Elliot Page and rapper Travis Scott as a bard. Nolan explained the Scott casting as "a nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap." Scholars, however, noted that such criticisms often rest on misconceptions—Homer does not describe Helen as "the most beautiful woman in the world," using instead epithets such as "white-armed" and "godlike." The idea became established in later Greek mythology through the Judgment of Paris.
Significant narrative changes include the reduction of the gods from Homer's full pantheon to a single distant deity represented primarily through sea storms and thunderbolts, with Athena appearing as a vision seen only by Odysseus. The film omits the Phaeacians entirely and has Odysseus tell his tales to Calypso, removes several major ghost encounters, and adds scenes including a full depiction of the Trojan Horse and the character Sinon (drawn from Virgil rather than Homer). Despite these alterations, both Wilson and Mendelsohn recommended the film, with Wilson noting it was "fun to be there with my kids" and suggesting viewers see it on a large screen.
Why This Matters
Nolan's $264 million opening weekend confirms broad commercial appetite for classical adaptations in the IMAX format. Classical scholars' documented concerns—omission of major gods, narrative restructuring, character-motivation shifts—establish a measurable record of source-material departures in a high-profile remake. Pre-release casting debates and box-office performance together shape cultural precedent for how major directors may adapt canonical texts and cast roles, affecting future greenlight decisions, audience reception frameworks, and academic discourse on fidelity.
